About PJ

I teach English to students in grades 5 through 12, especially those who may have had a challenging year and are worried about being “behind.”

Our first session is about understanding where you are, not judging where you should be. We work backwards through a difficult question until we find something you already understand, then build your skills from there.

Between sessions, I keep practice focused: usually just two or three meaningful exercises instead of a long worksheet. I also talk with parents about what homework time actually looks like at home, because sometimes improving a student’s confidence, routine, and approach to learning is just as important as the subject itself.

My goal is simple: help students feel more confident, understand what they’re learning, and realize that struggling with a subject doesn’t mean they can’t succeed at it.

Why PJ tutors

I first developed my appreciation for teaching by watching my late mother, who was an educator for much of her life. She taught me that education is not simply about academic achievement, but about helping students develop confidence, character, and a belief in their own potential.

Her example continues to inspire me as a tutor. What I value most is the opportunity to support students through moments when they may doubt themselves and help them recognize that challenges do not define their abilities.

I especially enjoy seeing the moment when a student finally understands something that once seemed difficult. Being part of that progress, whether it is improving their skills, building their confidence, or simply helping them approach learning with a more positive mindset, is what makes tutoring so meaningful to me.

A student PJ helped

Throughout my years as an Augustinian pre-service teacher and tutor, I have had the privilege of working with students who initially struggled with fear, self-doubt, or uncertainty about their academic abilities.

What has stayed with me most are the moments when students shared how much they had grown, not only academically, but also in confidence and in their willingness to learn. Some have told me that our time together helped them see learning in a different way: not simply as something found in books, but as something grounded in truth, strengthened by compassion, and enriched through understanding others.

For me, these experiences are among the most meaningful measures of success. Seeing students gradually overcome their doubts, become more confident in their abilities, and approach their studies with greater purpose is what continues to make teaching and tutoring deeply rewarding.

Outside tutoring

Outside tutoring, I enjoy playing Minecraft, which gives me a fun way to be creative, singing, and spending my weekends participating in community outreach programs.

Specializations

  • ADHD and attention difficultiesKeeps a session workable for a student who cannot hold focus through one.
  • Dyslexia and reading difficultiesWorks with students who decode slowly or avoid reading aloud.

During my teaching experience, I worked with students with dyslexia who found reading aloud challenging, as well as students with ADHD who had different learning and attention needs. Through my studies in Professional Education, particularly Inclusive Education, I learned the importance of understanding each student’s behavior and learning style before adapting my approach.

I made adjustments to help students feel comfortable while still maintaining appropriate classroom expectations. Most importantly, I wanted every student to feel seen, heard, and valued. This experience taught me that effective teaching is not about treating every student the same, but about creating an environment where each learner has the support and confidence to participate and grow.
