Why Students Struggle with Science

Ask a group of parents what their children find most difficult in school, and science usually shows up near the top of the list.

Some kids are overwhelmed by the vocabulary—words like photosynthesis or stoichiometry that seem impossible to remember. Others freeze up when faced with charts, graphs, or lab data. And plenty of bright, capable students lose confidence because science builds layer upon layer: if you miss the basics in middle school, high school feels like climbing a mountain without the right gear.

One parent told us about her son, a sixth grader, who used to love experimenting at home—mixing vinegar and baking soda, building small projects from science kits. But once tests and lab reports entered the picture, he started to feel like he “wasn’t good at science.” By the time we worked with him, he had already checked out in class. The problem wasn’t his ability. He just needed someone to slow down, explain concepts in plain language, and give him the chance to ask questions without feeling embarrassed. Within a few months, his curiosity was back—and so were his grades.

How Online Tutoring Fits Into Busy Lives

Families today juggle a lot: sports practices, music lessons, homework, jobs, and commutes. Driving across town for tutoring isn’t always realistic. Online sessions give students access to high-quality help without adding extra stress to the schedule.

The key difference is how interactive our sessions are. These aren’t just video calls where a tutor lectures while a student listens. Students and tutors share digital whiteboards to solve problems together. They can run virtual simulations—watching how changing a variable affects an experiment—and collaborate on lab reports in shared documents. The result feels less like “sitting through another class” and more like working side by side with someone who knows exactly how to make tough material feel manageable.

Tutoring That Meets Students Where They Are

Every student learns differently. Some need structure: step-by-step explanations, organized notes, and practice problems. Others thrive when they’re encouraged to explore, experiment, and ask “what if?” questions. A good tutor adapts to both.

Elementary School (Grades K-5)

Life Science

Here, we get into how living things grow and change. We'll cover animal and plant life cycles, what makes up their bodies (basic anatomy), and how they all fit together in their environments, from what they eat (food chains) to where they live (ecosystems).

Earth Science

We explore our planet and the space around it. This includes everything from why we have weather and different seasons to learning about rocks, minerals, and the solar system. We also touch on where we get our natural resources.

Physical Science

This is the fun part where we figure out how things work. You'll learn about the different properties of matter (solids, liquids, gases), how things move (forces and motion), and the different types of energy like light, heat, and sound. We'll even explore how to make things easier with simple machines.

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Life Science

We'll take a closer look at the basics of life itself. Topics include cell biology, how you inherit traits from your parents (genetics), the inner workings of the human body systems, the long history of life through evolution, and the relationships between living things in their environment (ecology).

Earth Science

We’ll explore the big-time forces that shape our planet. Think plate tectonics and earthquakes, volcanoes, and the rock cycle. We also dig into climate and weather patterns and even look at the night sky to understand moon phases and the seasons.

Physical Science

This section is all about the core building blocks of the universe. We'll get into atoms and elements, the basics of the periodic table, and how chemical reactions actually work. You’ll also learn about states of matter, different kinds of waves (like light and sound), electricity and magnetism, and of course, Newton's laws of motion.

Biology

This class is all about the fundamentals of life. We cover everything from cell structure and function and genetics to evolution and how we classify living things. We also talk about ecosystems. If you take AP Biology, we go a step further with advanced lab work and more complex topics in biochemistry.

Chemistry

Chemistry kicks off with the basics: atomic structure and the periodic table, and how chemical bonds form. Then we get into chemical reactions, states of matter, solutions, and acids and bases. The AP Chemistry course builds on this with more advanced concepts like kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics.

Physics

In physics, we study motion (kinematics), forces (Newton's laws), energy, and momentum. We also cover circular motion, waves (sound, light), and electricity and magnetism. The AP Physics courses are more advanced, covering topics like fluid dynamics and quantum mechanics, and can be calculus-based or algebra-based.

Environmental Science

This course focuses on our planet's biggest challenges. We'll explore ecosystems, biodiversity, population dynamics, and how to manage natural resources. We also talk about major issues like pollution and global climate change. AP Environmental Science takes a more in-depth, problem-solving approach to these topics.

Beyond Grades: Skills That Last

Of course, families want to see improvement on report cards, and tutoring certainly delivers that. But what we’ve noticed is that students gain something even more valuable: transferable skills.

They learn how to:

  • Break down big assignments into manageable pieces.

  • Organize their notes so they’re actually useful for studying.

  • Approach labs and projects with less stress.

  • Ask sharper questions in class and during review sessions.

And those skills don’t stay in science. A student who learns to carefully build a lab report often finds it easier to structure an essay in English. A child who gains confidence solving physics problems under pressure is less likely to freeze during a math exam. Tutoring builds habits that spill into every subject.

Handling Crunch Time

Having a science tutor gives students a safety net during stressful stretches.

Some need targeted prep for standardized tests like the ACT, SAT, or AP Biology and Chemistry. Others are gearing up for science fairs, where they must not only complete research but also explain it clearly to judges. We’ve also worked with students who just needed help polishing presentations—making sure their slides were clear, their data was accurate, and their explanations made sense to an audience.

One junior told us that before tutoring, AP Chemistry felt like “a wall of numbers and letters.” With steady, patient support, she not only passed but finished the year near the top of her class. Her mom later said the biggest change wasn’t the grade—it was her daughter’s willingness to stick with hard challenges instead of giving up.

Families often tell us the benefits affect their lives beyond academics. Kids start bringing up science at the dinner table, explaining ideas to siblings, or asking to try experiments in the kitchen. One dad laughed as he described his son turning their living room into a “mini lab” with baking soda and balloons.
