About Jackie

I teach Junior & Senior High School Math and Statistics and Probability to high schoolers, most of them between 13 and 17 years old. Over ten years in the classroom has taught me that almost no student is "bad at Math", they just have a gap somewhere earlier that nobody went back to fix. So that's where I start: find the last thing they truly understood, and build forward from there instead of pushing ahead on schedule.

My sessions are built around watching a student work, not lecturing at them. I'd rather see where they get stuck than guess. That means less talking from me and more solving from them - with me stepping in exactly where it's needed and stepping back once it isn't.

Outside one-on-one work, I also produce video lessons for my students and post them on TikTok, so they can revisit a concept on their own time whenever they need to.

Why Jackie tutors

What keeps me in this after ten-plus years is the moment a student stops waiting for me to walk them through a problem and just starts, labeling what they know, setting up the problem themselves, catching their own mistake before I do. That shift from dependent to capable is the whole reason I teach.

A student Jackie helped

I work with two groups. Most of my time is with Grade 10 and Grade 11 students in a regular classroom setting, teaching Mathematics, Statistics and Probability. Alongside that, I've spent the last three years as a Math Coach, training students to compete against other schools and in the Kangaroo Math Contest, coaching that's produced a champion finish, a 2nd place finish, and a silver medal at Kangaroo.

Those two roles feed each other. Coaching sharpens how I diagnose a student's thinking under pressure, and that same diagnostic approach is what I bring back to my everyday students who just need to catch up, not compete.

I specialize with students who've written themselves off, the ones who've decided Math isn't something they're capable of. I've helped students move from freezing at the sight of a word problem to setting up and solving one independently. On the competition side, I've helped students go from having never seen a contest-style problem to placing among the top finishers against other schools.

One of the achievements I'm proudest of is coaching a team from having no prior competition exposure to earning a champion title and a silver medal at the Kangaroo Math Contest. They started as regular classroom students with no contest experience, the kind of students who'd never been asked to solve a problem they hadn't seen a version of before. Getting them to a podium finish meant building both the math skill and the confidence to sit with an unfamiliar problem.

Outside tutoring

Right now, I'm working on a graduate degree in Education, so a lot of my "off-duty" time is still spent thinking about how to teach better. Beyond that, I like turning lesson materials into something genuinely well-made, clean worksheets, clear video lessons rather than just functional ones.
