About Nicolas
I teach mathematics to students in grades 9 through 12, working with them on everything from algebra and geometry to the more advanced material they encounter as they move toward graduation. I also teach French, so students and families who want support there have that option as well.
My approach is grounded in a solid academic foundation, I hold a PhD in Applied Mathematics, paired with real classroom experience. I spent three years working as a substitute math teacher across both junior and senior high school, which meant stepping into a wide range of classrooms and adapting quickly to different students, curricula, and learning paces. That experience, combined with years of one-on-one tutoring, shaped how I teach today: I diagnose where a student actually stands before jumping into new material, then build up their understanding step by step through scaffolding, rather than assuming they're ready for the next concept just because it's "next" on the syllabus.
I'm especially drawn to working with students who want to learn but get stuck, whether that's one specific topic that's tripping them up, or a broader need for consistent, ongoing support to reinforce what's being covered in class. Those are the students I find most rewarding to work with, because progress is visible and it tends to build momentum: once something clicks, their confidence and engagement usually follow close behind.

Why Nicolas tutors
I started tutoring while I was still a student myself, and I quickly discovered that teaching others reinforced my own understanding of the material, a lesson that shaped me both academically and, later, as a teacher. I've always loved mathematics, and that love led me down a variety of paths connected to it, from translating technical content to working on statistical software. I also spent time teaching math to high school students in a structured classroom setting, which I enjoyed. But if I'm honest, what I love most is one-on-one interaction, the challenge of figuring out exactly what works for a particular student, so I can help them not just improve their grades, but genuinely learn to enjoy mathematics.
Nicolas R., in their own wordsA student Nicolas helped
One of my students was particularly sharp. He grasped concepts quickly and could even explain them back in his own words. His challenge wasn't understanding the material, but consistency: small mistakes kept creeping into the middle steps of his problem-solving. We worked together to slow down at those critical points and build in the habit of verifying each step as he went. Through targeted practice on methodology rather than content, he became able to solve problems from start to finish without those errors, a shift that came from discipline, not raw ability, which made it especially satisfying to watch.
Nicolas R., in their own wordsOutside tutoring
Outside of tutoring, I spend a fair amount of my free time playing chess. I'm also into bird photography, which gets me outdoors and forces me to slow down and pay attention in a way that day-to-day life rarely does. More broadly, I just enjoy spending time in nature, whether that's on a dedicated photography outing or simply being away from a screen for a while. It's a good counterbalance to the more structured, analytical parts of my work.
Specializations
- Dyscalculia and math difficultiesWorks with students who struggle with number sense and arithmetic.
Through my teaching, I've developed a strong grounding in Singapore Math, an approach that guides students through concrete, pictorial, and abstract stages of learning, starting with hands-on manipulation, moving to visual representation, and finally to abstract reasoning. This methodology is particularly well-suited to students with dyscalculia, since it breaks concepts down into stages that build cognitive understanding rather than relying on memorization. That said, it isn't limited to students who struggle, the same structured reinforcement benefits virtually every learner, making abstract mathematical ideas more intuitive and durable.

About sessions with Nicolas
What does Nicolas teach?
Math, for Grades 9 to 12. Sessions are 1-on-1 and live, and you can ask for a specific topic before the first one.
Will my child work with Nicolas every session?
Yes. Your child keeps the same tutor for as long as you want them, which is the point of the way we match. If the fit is wrong we will move you, and it costs nothing to change.
How do I book a session with Nicolas?
Book the free session on this page. We call every family before the first session to confirm the details; ask for Nicolas then and we will match you if they have room. The first session is free, there is no card, and no obligation to continue.
