About Shifa

I teach Math and Science to students in grades 6 to 12, from Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 & 2 through Precalculus and Calculus, as well as AP Physics, AP Chemistry, and AP Biology. With 12+ years of teaching experience, I’ve learned that students often don’t struggle because a subject is too difficult, they struggle because one basic concept was never fully understood.

My approach is simple: understand the concept, then put the pencil to work. In Math and any subject involving calculations, I encourage students to solve by writing rather than just reading through examples. I also want students to feel comfortable making mistakes. A wrong answer is not a failure, it gives us something to investigate and learn from. I encourage students to ask as many questions as they need, because curiosity and questions are often where real understanding begins.

Over the years, I’ve found that the most rewarding part of tutoring happens in those small, unexpected moments, a student who was struggling suddenly gets the concept, looks up with a smile, and says, “Oh, I understand now!”
Seeing that change in a student, especially when they later solve a problem independently or improve their score, is what makes teaching so meaningful to me. Watching their confidence grow is what keeps me coming back to the next session.

In 2015, when I began working as an Assistant Professor, I was assigned a class that was expected to have a high failure rate in Mathematics. I focused on strengthening their fundamentals, working through problems step by step, and helping them build confidence. When the university results were announced, every student in the class had passed Mathematics. That experience has stayed with me throughout my teaching career.
Today, one of the things I value most is seeing students return with improved scores and greater confidence. Whether they are mastering a difficult concept, solving problems independently, or achieving a better grade, their progress is what makes teaching rewarding.

I enjoy reading and writing fiction, especially creating imaginary characters and stories. I also enjoy long drives and exploring topics related to ancient civilizations and prehistoric life.
