About Mary
I teach Science and other general subjects to kindergarten, elementary, and middle school students. With my extensive teaching experience in a Montessori school and home-based tutoring, I have mastered "following the child," which means identifying their specific learning styles, interests, and academic needs and utilizing them to tailor the delivery of instruction and the learning experience. Given my background in handling neurodivergent learners in my previous work, behavior management during class is also one I can offer to children who have specific learning and behavior difficulties.
The first thing I do in each session is to set a comfortable and fun atmosphere between me and the child. Then, I will proceed to implicitly learn their specific needs. I always make sure that the child completely understands the current idea before moving on to the next. Complex ideas can be hard to fully grasp, so I break big ones into chunks that are easy to understand. I always ensure that as every session ends, a child feels a lot more confident.
I am also open to discussing specific learning goals the parents have for their children and also helping them accomplish their homework or prepare for an exam.

Why Mary tutors
Unlike teaching in a class composed of multiple and various types of learners, tutoring is a simplified and more targeted approach in teaching and learning, as the teacher gets to closely monitor the students academic progress, identify their specific learning needs and utilize them to tailor the way they deliver instruction. In tutoring, the learners are given the opportunity to have a personalized learning experience and achieve their specific academic goals in the shortest possible time. And I love it when I witness my students achieve their targeted learning goals in no time.

I had a 4-year-old student named Rafa. He has difficulty writing due to a weak grip. Before teaching him writing lines, letters, etc, I started teaching him the basic fine motor skills. In every lesson I teach, I always make sure that my students' interests are integrated. Upon learning from Rafa's parent his favorite show (Toy Story and his favorite colors (red and blue), I began incorporating them into every lesson.
I started improving his palm strength by asking him to open threaded jars, pry containers, and squeeze objects like droppers, tongs, and sponges. I would always make sure that he would not get bored by making every lesson seem like a fun game.
After improving his palm strength, I started developing his finger positioning skills by doing picking exercises using only the index finger, middle finger, and thumb; and pinning push pins into soft surfaces first, like styrofoam, to hard ones like rigid erasers.
After improving those finer skills, I then proceeded to develop his fingers' dexterity by starting to color simple shapes, tracing lines, and writing lines independently. In doing so, we gradually transitioned from big and jumbo crayons and pencils to thinner ones eventually.
After 2 months, I witnessed Rafa's improvement. He finally learned how to copy his name correctly along the writing lines.

I am an intermediate casual musician and songwriter. I love playing instruments, but I mostly play guitar using the fingerstyle technique. I make songs upon request and also get to sing at some wedding events and coach kids vocally in preparing for singing or talent competitions.
Specializations
- ADHD and attention difficultiesKeeps a session workable for a student who cannot hold focus through one.
- Autistic studentsAdapts pace, structure and sensory load, and keeps a session predictable.
- Executive function and study skillsBuilds planning, organisation and study routines alongside the subject.
- Working to an IEP or 504 planReads a documented accommodation plan and teaches to it.
I had a 5-year-old student named Khian when I was working at a Montessori school. I had a tutorial setup with this little boy diagnosed with Level 3 Autism Spectrum Disorder and a speech impairment. I was asked to give him general academic support. However, it was quite challenging as the child manifested severe disruptive repetitive behaviors, like completely taking his clothes off every time he would enter the room or basically every time he was going indoors. He would also run around tiptoeing while flapping his hands every time he was overwhelmed and would throw tantrums if he did not get what he wanted. With my knowledge in Applied Behavior Analysis and other behavior management techniques, I started developing his functional skills first before proceeding to teaching him academic or Montessori lessons. Eventually, all those repetitive behaviors were gone. He became more self-reliant, and his focus improved, making him ready for more advanced learning endeavors.
