About Surbhi

I am an Upper Elementary Math Specialist working primarily with students in Grades 3 to 5, with a strong focus on Grades 3 and 4, the years where math confidence is either built or broken.

Over the last 7 years, I’ve worked with learners across IB (PYP), Cambridge, US Common Core, and CBSE curricula, both online and in-person. My strength lies in helping children who feel scared, slow, or unsure about math develop deep conceptual clarity and confidence.

Parents often tell me that their children begin to enjoy math for the first time after working with me, not because of shortcuts or tricks, but because they finally understand why math works.

I specialise in: • Concept-first instruction (not rote methods) • Number sense, operations, fractions, and word problems • Closing foundational gaps without labelling children as “weak” • Reducing math anxiety and building independent reasoning

I believe strong math teaching is not about speeding ahead, it’s about slowing down at the right moments.

I am currently focused on teaching Grades 3 to 5 and gradually expanding into higher elementary, while also exploring leadership and mentoring roles within education.

Why Surbhi tutors

I’ve always felt naturally drawn toward teaching, especially in the early years when the right guidance can completely change a child’s relationship with learning. Many adults grow up carrying anxiety around subjects like math, often because they were taught to memorize instead of think. I want children to experience learning differently, with curiosity, confidence, and joy.
For me, tutoring is not just about improving grades. It’s about helping students feel capable. I love showing children that math can actually be creative, logical, and fun when approached the right way. I also genuinely enjoy working with kids, they are curious, honest, imaginative, and surprisingly thoughtful collaborators. Every child thinks differently, and I enjoy finding approaches that make learning click for them.

A student Surbhi helped

One of my students came to me with severe math anxiety and very low confidence. She would freeze during open-ended questions and constantly searched for the “correct” method instead of trusting her own thinking.
Instead of immediately focusing on procedures, I first tried to change her relationship with numbers. I showed her that numbers are human inventions, earlier humans used tally marks and different symbols, and over time these systems evolved into the modern decimal system using just 10 symbols (0 to 9). This helped her realize that math is a human-created language, not something above or beyond us.
Alongside this, I used visual models, games, and discussion-based problem solving to make math feel safe and engaging. Over time, her anxiety became manageable, and she started attempting problems more independently and confidently.
The biggest change was not just academic improvement, but the shift from fear to curiosity and participation.

Outside tutoring

I enjoy reading, especially books related to philosophy, spirituality, and mathematics. I regularly read the Bhagavad Gita and practice meditation, both of which help me stay grounded and reflective.

I also love traveling, meeting people with different experiences and exploring quieter places in nature. In my free time, I enjoy reading math books, solving puzzle games, and engaging with logical and creative challenges. I’m deeply interested in understanding how people think and learn.
